Chapter 1: The Gathering at Gatewood
It was not that Narcie didn’t like road trips; it was just that she could think of better company than a pissed off cat and her dead Nonna’s ashes.
Baptiste had been yowling since somewhere around Mile Marker 35 and showed no signs of stopping. Apparently, five hours in a rusted-out Ford with dubious air conditioning was the limit for her feline partner in crime. The radio had saved her for a while, but since they had crossed from West Virginia to Ohio, there hadn’t been a single note coming in to save her from his long-winded lament.
As Baptiste settled into a long-haul rhythm, Narcie set her focus on the gently rippling hills and weather-worn farms that followed the road ahead. She pored over the details of each green knoll and memorized the soft lines of the muddy riverbank, but it was a fruitless effort. Nothing was going to take her mind off her destination that was looming closer with every turn of the river.
As the river gave another twist and the road followed with it, a half-tilted sign greeted Narcie.
“Welcome to the City of Loire”
The town sprouted up around her, still winding with the river, and it seemed to be comprised of a smattering of mom and pop shops and a few produce stands. A city, it was not.

A Synopsis

A man with ADHD can develop his brain to have super-human perspective. A charismatic woman can train her skills to own a room. A person with autism can grow to solve impossible equations.
And the World Council can’t let that happen.
As more people begin to show new and powerful skills and threaten the ironclad control of the government, they are quietly tucked away and labeled “Maladaptive”. With each new law they are being systemically wiped from the face of history.
Going undercover and infiltrating Council facilities, the crew of The Catalyst is on a mission to rescue as many Maladaptives as they can and bring them into the resistance. The Captain yearns for a peaceful life at sea but her sails are filled with the winds of revolution. She must answer its call– risking her ship, her crew and her humanity– or watch the world sink to the depths around her.
